Whiplash Physiotherapy Melbourne
Definition
Whiplash is a term used to describe a neck injury that is due to forceful, back and forth motions of the neck. It most often occurs following a motor vehicle accident, however it may also be due to a sporting accident or other trauma. Symptoms typically develop after the initial incident and may result in neck pain and stiffness, loss of range of motion of the neck, headaches, tenderness into shoulders, upper backs and arms. Some people may also experience fatigue and dizziness.
Treatment
Treatment of whiplash will likely involve input from your physiotherapist and your doctor (particularly if injury is due to a motor vehicle accident). Your physiotherapist will likely use a combination of treatment techniques based on your presentation.
These may include:
- heat
- cryotherapy (icing)
- massage
- mobilisation and exercises targeting mobility and strength.
Whiplash may take a period of time to settle and throughout this period you may experience peaks and troughs. This means rehab often looks different to what you may have anticipated.

And while this is normal it is also important that you continue to follow up with your doctor and physiotherapist during this time to ensure everything is on the right track.
