massage for Afl footballers
Are you getting the most out of your body this footy season?
With footy season in full swing, how is your body currently holding up against the constant stresses week in and week out?
From the professional AFL player to your simple weekend warrior, it is important to be mindful of injury prevention and the importance of good recovery. One of the best ways to keep on top of this is with deep-tissue massage.
The biggest benefit for any AFL player is that massage speeds up recovery. After muscles are put under immense stress and used extensively during a heavy training session or game, the muscle fibres can become damaged and lactic acid can accumulate. This can cause a stiff and achy discomfort in the muscles which is more popularly referred to as DOMS. (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). Deep tissue massage can help to relieve such discomfort by breaking up the knots and scar tissue.
Regular massages can help restore elasticity to increase muscle flexibility and the range of motion in a joint, both of which are essential to keep players at peak performance and minimise the risk of injury.
After working extensively for the past 6 years with The Richmond Football Club, I have implemented and witnessed firsthand the benefits of regular massage. Treatment pre and post-game has shown to increase performance by warming up the muscles as well as helping both the mind and body to wind down after a high intensity game.
Whether you’re feeling a little worse for wear after the weekend, or in the middle of a rehabilitation program, a deep tissue massage can help speed up the recovery.
Remember to take care of your muscles and they’ll take care of you!
