What is Illiotibial Band (ITB) Friction Syndrome?
Iliotibial Band (ITB) Friction Syndrome is a common complaint amongst runners and people who play running based sports. The pain is usually felt on the outside of the knee and in a broad area as pictured. The pain will get worse with more activity and is often worse after/the next day.
The Iliotibial Band (ITB) is a long band of connective tissue that attaches the Tensor Fascia Lata (hip muscle) all the way down to the outside of the knee. Irritation of the attachment of the ITB into the knee can cause pain in this area..
What causes illiotibialband ( ITB) friction Syndrome?
The acute pain caused by irritation and inflammation can initially be settled down with relative rest, ice, anti-inflammatories and hands one treatment. However it is important to identify the underlying cause of the irritation so that it may be addressed. Otherwise the irritation will continue to arise with load.
Common contributing factors include:
-
Weakness or underutilization in some muscles, particularly glutes/hip stabilisers
-
Poor movement patterns or running technique, particularly a cross over foot pattern or trendelenburg gait
-
Training errors and poor load management, too much training to soon
-
Tightness in some muscles, particularly the TFL
