What happens during a sports physio session: A Comprehensive Guide to Sports Physiotherapy consultations in Melbourne.
Stepping into the world of sports physiotherapy can often be akin to opening a door to a new realm of rehab and performance improvement, especially for athletes and individuals dedicated to physical fitness.
The journey through a sports physiotherapy session is not just about injury recovery; it's a path towards achieving peak physical condition, understanding one's body better, and preventing future injuries.
A sports physiotherapy consultation is for anyone who enjoys physical activity. You don’t need to be an elite athlete, and everyone can enjoy the benefits of a sports physiotherapy consultation.
You just need to enjoy movement, whether that is a pilates class, a gym circuit class, a walk with your dog, or a set of tennis with a mate. Everyone who wants to move better and pain free can benefit from a sports physiotherapy consultation.
Your First Sports Physiotherapy Session IN MELBOURNE: HOw does physiotherapy work?
Your initial foray into sports physiotherapy begins with a thorough assessment—a cornerstone for tailoring the session to your specific needs.
This involves a subjective assessment, where you'll discuss not just your current condition but also your medical history, lifestyle, and any specific triggers that may aggravate or alleviate your symptoms.
This dialogue sets the stage for a tailored physical assessment, guiding the physiotherapist to diagnose accurately and plan an effective treatment regime.
WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR TO A PHYSIOTHERAPY SESSION?
Great question. We get asked this a lot.
For best results, your treating sports physiotherapist will need to see your body part of interest move.
So for foot and ankle, hip and knee issues, shorts are great.
For shoulders, backs and necks, a singlet top with thin straps is adequate.
If you're comfortable, we'll ask you to remove your T-shirt or shirt, so we can see your body move through the appropriate motions. Please don't wear sports bras with think straps, as they block our vision for your spine, though a thin strapped bra works very well.
We have towels to drape your body with, and spare shorts you can borrow as well.
Overall, we'll only ask you to remove clothing to expose a body part to the level of your comfort.
If you don't want to remove any clothing for any reason, be it cultural or for modesty reasons, then that's totally ok as well. We'll do our absolute best to accommodate your needs, and do everything we can to make your session comfortable.
Understanding Your Condition via thorough Sports Physiotherapy Assessment & TESTING
During the first session, expect to be actively involved in exercises or movements that help the physiotherapist understand your condition's nature and extent.
This process is crucial for developing a personalised treatment plan that can range from manual therapy and exercise programs, and also a detailed strength assessment using our VALD system, or hand held dynamometers.
Additionally, advice on home or gym exercises and lifestyle modifications plays a critical role in enhancing the healing process and preventing future injuries.

Follow-Up Sessions For Best Sports Physiotherapy in Melbourne Recovery: How DOES A COURSE OF PHYSIO PROGRESS?
Subsequent sessions are pivotal in tracking your progress, adjusting treatments as needed, and introducing new exercises or therapies.
These sessions are dynamic, with a focus on mobilisation, strengthening, and stabilisation exercises tailored to your recovery stage.
Education on lifestyle and sports based changes remains a vital component, ensuring a comprehensive approach to your overall recovery.
Generally, at Melbourne sports Physiotherapy, we’ll see the majority of people 3-4 times over the first 3 weeks. This allows us help calm your pain down as fast as possible, whilst making sure that your diagnosis is correct, and the initial treatment regime is working.
Confirming a diagnosis can sometimes be difficult, and occasionally it's clinically necessary to change a diagnosis and treatment path, depending on how your body responds.
Everybody is different, so tailoring treatment to you specifically is super important. It’s definitely not a one size fits all process!
HOW MANY SESSIONS OF SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPY ARE NEEDED?
On average, people see us 7-9 times for a sports physio injury.
Keep in mind that this is an average, and we have people with minor issues only needing 2-3 sessions, and some people recovering from large surgeries that see us 25+ times over 12+ months.
It absolutely varies, and we only book our sessions as required, as our mission is to get you better as fast we can, and send you back out onto the sporting arena.
