How Sports Physiotherapy Can Help you Perform Better
We live in a world where all of us want to be the best that we can be - the best mother, father, employee, friend and sportsman. When it comes to sports - we push ourselves and persevere through hard training with the goal of improving our physical performance.
This intention is good, but sometimes the method or principles we follow can be unhelpful of even detrimental to our precious performance.
Often, the first time we see athletes is only after they have sustained an injury of some sorts from pushing themselves to get to their goal faster, which makes us sad as most of these injuries could have been avoided in the first place with some help and guidance.
Sports Physiotherapists are great at helping athletes recover from their injuries and get back into their training and competitions, but what many athletes don't know is that alongside this, we can also help you improve your performance with the skills that we have.
helping athletes recover from their injuries
1. We Can Find Your Weak Spots
Now don’t panic! We all have them - different bodies come with different strengths and weaknesses.
During our thorough assessment we will be able to pinpoint where your weak spots are and target those during our therapy sessions.
This will automatically give you a leg-up in performance and will decrease your chances of getting injured at the same time.
Knowing what your weak spots are will also enable you to be proactive and make sure that you warm up correctly and watch out for certain things while training and competing.
2. Team Work
We’re all about working together, so it’s important for us to discuss your training schedule, expectations and so on with you coach or coaches.
This allows us to work as a team in order to help you get the most out of your training and for you to perform better.
It also ensures that your coaches know exactly what the plan is from our side and that we know theirs so that we’re all on the same page.
This leads to an overall happy and organised training regime.
3. Relax and recover
We know how hard you train, and we see exhausted athletes regularly. Our skill set enables us to give you a recovery session focusing on decreasing muscle tension and helping with delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
This does more than just helping you to relax. Tight, shortened and tense muscles paired with stiff joints can lead to injury very easily. By making use of recovery sessions that target those areas, you will perform better and have less chance of injury.
4. Strengthening Important Muscles
Many training programmes focus on fitness and global muscle strengthening. However, it’s vital not to neglect your stabilising muscles that will prevent injury during activity, add stability to all of your movements and increase your endurance.
If your stabilising muscles are weak, it results in over-compensation of your global mover muscles which can lead to improper technique, decreased endurance in some activities and can lead to injury.
So keeping your stabilisers active will improve your performance in a significant way.
5. Technique, Technique, Technique
Technique is a topic that is frequently mentioned in our blogs - and that is because it’s so so important and is something that we love helping our clients with because it works so well.
We can evaluate your technique by either watching your practice/perform or by watching a video of you doing the activity from all angles.
Ensuring that your technique is on point will boost your performance like crazy. Technique work can be difficult for clients because there’s often small changes that we make along with your coaches which can take a while for you to start doing out of habit - but once the good technique is there, the performance will follow.
6. Catching it before it’s too late
Sports physiotherapists will be very present in your training and progress. This allows us to monitor and track your performance when we see you.
Is it just a niggle or could it be something serious?
A tough question, because we know that you don't want to stop training and lose out on progress and performance if it’s just a niggle that will go away and that you can train through, and we also know that you don’t want to keep pushing yourself if it’s potentially something dangerous that you could be making worse.
That’s where we can help - our assessments allow us to evaluate and differentiate between a not so serious niggle that we can maybe lighten your training load a bit for, and something that will become a proper injury if you keep training.
Either way, this will save your performance in the long run, as if it’s a niggle, you will be able to still make progress, and on the other hand if it’s something that could lead to more serious injury, we could stop it in its tracks and do some damage control, which could save you from having to stop training for a while if you actually do get injured.
We love helping our athletes out and we love seeing you succeed. We have seen so many athletes reach levels they didn’t think they could, and we love it. We love being a part of your team and we love working with you and your coaches to see you exceed your expectations.
So if you want to take your performance to the next level, contact one of us for the beginning of an amazing journey in reaching your maximum potential.
