What is Remedial Massage and what are the benefits?
Remedial Massage is a complementary therapy which aims to treat muscles that are immobile, tense and knotted. It can even treat damaged tissue. It can be a very effective treatment option for managing dysfunctions throughout the human body such as stress, anxiety, insomnia, headaches, sub-acute and chronic pain as well as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (aka DOMS).
There are an array of benefits that arise from massage therapy including:.

The Massage Treatment
Massage is an excellent treatment option and is very effective in removing unwanted pain or discomfort. A physical examination would be required to identify what tissues are causing distress through Range of Motion testing and palpation (touching the muscles or joints). Following the testing, specific treatment modalities would be used such as trigger point therapy and gentle stretching to relax and soothe soft tissue tension.
At Melbourne Sports Physiotherapy we offer various types of massage treatments from remedial torelaxation as well as pregnancy.
Self Care
Self care is an integral part of recovery, whether it's from a sports injury or just being tense and sore from work. Stretching is a great way to improve your flexibility and get your body moving at its most optimal. Try to incorporate stretching into your daily routine. Stretching also works very well post massage to maintain length throughout your muscles. There are also various other self care techniques, which could be used to ease stiff and sore muscles. These include:
-
Using a foam roller or spikey ball
-
Self massage to the affected area if possible
-
Use of a heat pack to increase blood flow and reduce pain
-
Take regular breaks at your job eg: get up from your desk at every 30 mins
-
Regular exercise - Pilates, Yoga, Gym
As you can see, there are many ways you can nurture your health and wellbeing, and massage is one of those ways! Why wouldn’t you want to book a massage appointment? It may just change your life!
And one final note “Massage is not just a luxury. It's a way of a healthier, happier life.”
Thank you and be well.
